                    Puppy love by Francisco Sionil Jose 

     Love find its way, a right direction in the right time. Everyone has an experience puppy love, but does puppy love becomes true love?  True love waits but not all who are willing to wait can be loved back by someone who he/she love. Many of us are praying for a future wife or husband that will be at our side till death do apart. Puppy love is a crush, calf love or kitten love is an informal term for feelings of love, romance or infatuation often felt by young people during their childhood and adolescence.

     This story gives me insight that true love will always remain in the heart and mind even though Jacobo were already in loved by someone. The story Puppy love brings me back into my childhood days. As I have read the story Puppy love by Francisco Sionil Jose, at first scenario where the first character introduced, his background gives me more information to be able to know what he has made and why he’s still remembering the girl Gina. The flow of the story is what do really kids do nowadays like playing, studying and also paying attention for school doings. I remember the time that I was in grade school, I got a crush on my classmate who is very intelligent but back then the meaning of crush for me is just an idol. He was also my partner for dance in our Christmas Party, he always irritate me because he said that I’m cute when I got angry and all I can do is just to rolled up my eyes to be look like really angry. The story made me reminiscing while reading this text. Like Jacobo and Gina in the story they was separated, we are also separated because my aunt fetch me and transferred me to another school. Then on I realized that kind of puppy love, the boy that makes me angry on purpose is also has a crush on me. He confessed his love for me but I change the topic that we should be friends because we are still kids and I tell  him that he should wait for me until we finish our college. Then suddenly I haven’t visited our town for a year because I was attending my high school in Manila. Until now I haven’t seen him personally but I found him at Facebook he’s doing well and he got a girlfriend already. That’s not a big deal for me because I know that we’re still kid back then but I’m still hoping that he would remember me when there’s a time that we met. The ending of the story is not what I was expected, I thought that Gina and Jacobo will live happily ever after but the part of the story that Jacobo got a family made me think that it was still possible that he would still care for Gina after all those years that he also become happy living with his wife. I expected while reading at the part where they have met again that Jacobo and Gina will going to be together but suddenly their fate is not for the both of them. The sad part was when Jacobo confess and tell the truth that he love Gina so much and the mist of Gina’s eyes that he cannot forget for how many years.

     The title Puppy love has a purpose for the readers to be convince and I am into it because we all know that when it talks about love it really touches our desire to read the text or books. Puppy love has encountered and experienced by many, the story brought me to my childhood days where I also experienced those scenario. The town of San Jacinto where Gina and Jacobo first feel in love but they called it puppy love because it refers to falling in love at the very young age. The theme of the story is love find its way back to you, for how many years had passed Jacobo still cannot forget about Gina who is his first friend, a fist love, a fist kiss and then love really find its way back to Gina. Nothing has changed but Gina forgets him already because he looks different unlike when there were still a kid. There is an image that stand out in the story like “the old bayside night club at the boulevard” (6). It is where he met Gina and introduced himself, hoping that he will notice by Gina but still Gina didn’t know. If ever he tell directly that he is the boy who lives at San Jacinto maybe Gina will be his wife. The main character of the story is Jacobo Salcedo and Gina Garcia. Jacobo Salcedo who became successful and rich came from a poor family where he lives in the bamboo house at San Jacinto. His father always gamble fighting cocks and got home dunked and his mother plays jueteng after selling fish and salt. Gina Garcia has a brownish hair, dark eyes, nice voice, and she also loves to read novels especially romances like wuthering heights. She came from a rich family who owns a big hacienda but lost their wealth due to war. The problem start if you try not only to get everything for an adult relationship, but also for the heights of excitement and intensity that had experienced first love. 

     “Puppy love should be avoided if you want to enjoy strong relationship later in life” according to a leading sociologist. The attraction of opposite sex does not start in puberty it start much earlier judging from own feeling. There is a perfect timing to find the right one who can be at your side in struggles, happiness, and also in sadness that will challenge us. But for me a puppy love cannot be your true love because there are possibilities that you can be with other people. The feeling was there for a very long time but it wasn’t a true love after all because Jacobo was learned to be in love for another women who is his wife Jenny. There must be no regrets because life must go on and we have to face reality that sometimes we thought that the one who is there would stay forever. No matter what we can say to Jacobo for his unbelievable love that lasted for so many years he still forget Gina and learned to love and became loyal and faithful to Jenny.
